McDonald’s Global Capability Center (GCC), Hyderabad
Happiness Through Design
McDonald’s new Global Capability Centre in Hyderabad spans four floors across 1.56 lakh sq. ft. at RMZ Nexity, HITEC City. The project brief was deceptively simple: to ‘design happiness’. But at McDonald’s, happiness is not a single idea; its meaning is left open to interpretation. While the brand is widely associated with operational efficiency, its deeper strength lies in continuous evolution and innovation across food, experience, packaging, and delivery. The Hyderabad GCC had to embody that same spirit.
The design of the new GCC, rather than resolving the idea of ‘happiness’ into one gesture, expresses it through spaces that can be purposeful or playful, focused or social, depending on who needs what and when.
The programme comprises a variety of workspaces, meeting areas, training rooms, and breakout zones, bringing together global design principles and efficient workflows while creating opportunities for individuals to connect and make the space their own.
A key challenge was to connect the four floors in a way that encourages interaction across teams. An internal staircase is used as a connecting element that becomes a central feature and activates the entire volume. This design approach ensures that each space is anchored by a strong focal element. A vertical chain installation on this staircase forms the “M” motif and adds visual continuity.
The space reflects a balance between global brand values and local expression. Each floor features motifs and elements inspired by local culture through references to festivals, dance, art, and architecture. The reception area abstracts the brand’s signature golden arches through an installation suspended from the ceiling. The first floor uses a bold red colour in its ceiling as a theme to reflect energy. Access to natural light, use of ergonomic furniture, and eco-friendly material choices support comfort, acoustics, and thermal balance, supporting the physical and cognitive needs of every individual. The lighting strategy, too, is orchestrated to support daily rhythms and reduce fatigue.
The McDonald’s GCC in Hyderabad translates brand thinking into a built environment where innovation is integrated, care is built into systems, and spaces respond to varied needs. When happiness is designed, spaces begin to work differently for everyone, yet seamlessly for all.
