Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), Navi Mumbai
An Airport Rooted in Symbolism, Powered by Innovation
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the airport’s terminal captures the spirit of India with a lotus-inspired roof, flooding the vast hall with natural light. The innovative dual-column system with mega columns delivers an open, airy space, guiding passengers seamlessly beneath an extraordinary floating roof. Every petal-shaped curve demanded custom moulds and exceptional construction precision, merging poetic symbolism with engineering brilliance.
Constructing NMIA’s complex curving “petals” demanded custom-designed moulds and millimetre-level precision, merging visual poetry with structural mastery. The performance-driven roof not only captures rainwater and reduces wind resistance but also dramatically enhances passenger experience with abundant daylight and sweeping open spaces.
Set across a master plan of 2,866 hectares with a built-up area matching the world’s top aviation hubs. With an initial capacity of 20 million passengers per annum (MPPA), the airport will eventually expand to manage 90 MPPA, making it one of the largest passenger-handling airports in India. Experts predict NMIA will attract billions in foreign and private investments and boost Maharashtra’s GDP, and will also spur real estate growth, with property prices appreciating in key areas. The airport is also designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating features like solar power and rainwater harvesting. NMIA stands as a testament to innovation through unity and a bold leap for India’s global ambitions.
